Facial injuries often result in trauma to the nose, resulting in nasal fractures. Within the first two weeks after the injury, the nose may be reset under general anesthesia, with a closed rhinoplasty. Injuries or congenital anomalies may result in an unacceptable appearance and difficulty breathing. These problems may be corrected with reshaping of the nose. A cosmetic rhinoplasty may be performed to reduce a dorsal hump, refine the nasal tip, and to narrow or shorten the nose.
